“Wow…” Snow had never been outside the small world of The Claw before. That was what she and Jellybean had been calling the animal shelter they’d escaped from last night. Sure, there were windows in The Claw, but they weren’t always open, and it was hard getting up there! The beautiful sunrise slowly faded into the clear blue sky. Snow heard Jellybean’s belly rumble. “What will we eat?” Jellybean asked. “We’ll…catch something.” Snow replied bluntly. Jellybean snorted. No one visiting The Claw had ever played with them. At least, not when they were adults. They all just wanted to look at the annoying young -lings, only paying attention to the adults when they were willing to be picked up. “Snow…are you sure this was the right decision? Escaping from The Claw, I mean?” Jellybean asked Snow worriedly. Since Snow had been born just a few minutes before the jumpy calico, she was technically Jellybean’s “big sister”. To Jellybean, Snow was her best friend and hero. Most siblings didn’t stay close when they grew up. But Jellybean followed Snow everywhere, looking up to Snow.
Suddenly something rustled in the bush only a few feet away from them. “Get down!” Snow hissed. Jellybean did as told, her eyes darting around her surroundings. An enormous rat came scurrying out of the greenery. The rodent’s fat body suggested it wasn’t very bright. Snow waited until the rat was a few millimetres away. Wait…wait…almost there… Snow lashed out and flipped the rat onto into it’s back. She quickly bit its neck, trying not to flinch as the rat jerked suddenly. But when Snow stepped back to look at her kill, the rat’s eyes were staring blankly at the sky.
“Woah! You made your first kill!” Jellybean exclaimed. Snow stepped aside. “Eat. There’s enough for both of us.” Soon both cats were comfortably full, and Snow began to feel drowsy. “Sleep, sister. I’m not as tired as you.” That was all Snow heard before she closed her eyes, and fell into quiet darkness.
“Snow! WAKE UP!!” Jellybean’s terrified shriek confused Snow. What was there to fear in The Claw? But then Snow remembered. They weren’t in The Claw. All kinds of dangers lurked nearby. Snow groggily raised her head. “Wha-” The words stuck in her throat. Five huge cats loomed over Jellybean and Snow. “You’re under arrest.” The cat at the front announced. “You’ve trespassed onto our territory. Now, we must bring you to The Feline Universe.”
